Another Beautiful Day in Peoria

…Another loaded gun in school… what troubles me is the fact that the gun wasn’t found until he was arrested on unrelated charges: jury tampering. How is it that kids can bring loaded guns to school? And why would I want my kid going to a school where it seems guns are rampant? Like it or not, Perception is Reality.

A 17-year-old Peoria High School student had a loaded gun with him at school Monday, the second time in two weeks that a District 150 student has brought a loaded weapon to school.

Montey P. Alexander, 1026 W. Third St., was arrested about noon and booked on charges of unlawful use of a weapon, harassment of a witness and communication with a jury witness. He also was cited for not having a firearm owner’s identification card.

Am I wrong? Weren’t metal detectors installed at the schools? If no, WHY THE HELL NOT?

(Using your best Steve Stone voice) Tip to all you young thugs out there, you can bring a Butcher Knife to school and if you’re caught, you’ll only get a slap on the wrist.

Also in a separate incident last Monday, a male Richwoods High School student was found with a butcher’s knife outside of the school, Hinton said.

The student was suspended, but Hinton said he doesn’t believe the student was arrested.

He doesn’t “believe” he was arrested? He’s not sure? What he should’ve said: “no, he wasn’t arrested, but I’m going to personally look into why not and spearhead sweeping changes in how we police our schools”

Instead, we get this comforting thought:

Hinton said no specific changes have been made to security in light of the recent incidents.

Seriously, can you really blame anyone for wanting to move out to Dunlap?

Let’s just set up metal detectors to get out of bed in morning and at every doorway you pass throughout the day.

Just think of it. More jobs created. No one would be wearing belts because you would have to take them off every five minutes so there’d be more pants around people’s ankles. Change would be a thing of the past. All money would be in bill form.

    Stop living in fear.

I’m not living in fear, but when kids are bringing loaded guns into our schools and those in charge pass it off by saying it’s an isolated incident; our schools are safe; etc, etc… it just doesn’t fly.

I was able to listen to some of the Markley & Luciano show on the way home last night when Jamie took Jim Artis to task on this subject. Jim kept saying how hard the school board was working on this, but Jamie felt it was only getting lip service and no-one was coming out to say they were going to do ANYTHING.

Again, the perception of a dangerous school turns into the reality.

Stop living in fear?! Are you freakin’ kidding me? We have seatbelts in cars because crashes are statically common enough to make them worthwhile. How many more reports do you have to hear about guns being brought to school or kids being mowed down in libraries, classrooms and playgrounds before you think metal detectors in schools are justified?

Kids will always be curious/attracted to guns as they are to fireworks. America will likely continue to have some parents who are asleep at the wheel a good deal of the time. It doesn’t look like the right to own a firearm is going to be repealed anytime soon.

Why not go the distance to protect the most precious members of our population?

How about the next time you board an airplane we say, “Metal dectors? Nah! We don’t need no stinkin’ metal detectors. Stop living in fear, stop holding up the line and get on the damn plane already.”

Stop putting your greed before your children.
