I need help getting out of Chicago!

I’m headed to Wrigley to see the Cubs vs SD tomorrow afternoon.  (Nice timing, eh? 50 degrees and rain forcasted, not to mention their stellar record of late)

We usually stay with a friend who lives in Wrigleyville, but she’ll be out of town this weekend, so we’re driving back after the game.  With general traffic congestion, combined with Wrigley traffic, the Friday flight out of town, and all the mess of construction going on, leaving the ballpark around 5pm sounds like a hellatious experience.

I’m considering parking down by Joliet.  I haven’t checked yet, but I’m sure there’s a commuter train into town which I could transfer to the EL up to Wrigley, and therefore avoid all the traffic out of town after the game.

Has anybody ever done this or have any suggestions?

You’ll have to hoof it from Union Station into the Loop to catch the El, though. It’s also an hour and a half train ride from Joliet to Chicago, or vice versa, so I don’t know if you’re saving any time over sitting in traffic. Although less gas wasted and at least you can read a book.

You could also take a bus from Peoria to O’Hare – picks up at Bradley – and then take the Blue Line from O’Hare into the city and transfer to the Red to go back north to Wrigley.

Personally I’d probably spend a couple hours in Wrigleyville at the bars and restaurants and drive out when the traffic had cooled down, but I don’t know what your timing is.
