Pepe Taco Now Open
Another guilty pleasure besides my love of the song Brandy is my love of the crappy quasi-mexican food at Pepe Taco. Well, they’re back open complete with a little sign saying “taco tuesday”. I forgot to bring my camera today, dammit, because the temporary big hand-painted sign saying “Mexican Restaurant Now Open” is a classic. I was actually hoping for something a little more along the lines of Vallarta’s, but the small sign that says “taco tuesday” makes me think it’s a little less authentic and more Pepe’ish. Whatever it is, it’s gotta be better than McDonalds.
Update: Got My Picture, and it’s called Gran Azteca

I’m having their enchiladas for lunch - it’s NOT Pepe Taco…unfortunately.

It appears we may have crossed paths. I really do miss Pepe Taco, but I like the more authentic food much better, even though it seems we’re getting a glut of good mexican restaurants around here lately.
Don’t care for the cheese sauce- tastes more like Ranch dressing than Cheese. I had a killer Burrito, though.

Although I have little patience for Mex-American food, I do have a soft spot for Pepe Taco (as well as chili 3 ways and pork tenderloin sandwiches a foot in diameter) - do to my Peoria raising. Glad to hear Peoria is getting more authentic places. You’ll have to let me know if any of them make really good traditional tacos. You know - 2 small corn tortillas (as extra padding incase the first one breaks) filled with pork or carne asada and garnished with cilantro, pepper & onion. All for about $1.25 - 1.50. Order up 3 with a Negra Modelo and I’m in Mexican streetfood heaven.

If that’s real mexican food you can have it. Eck.
I WANT MY PEPE TACO BACK!!

I’ll count you as one who also does not frequent Fiesta, Jalepenos, Vallartas or Cinco.
Now I know how Carlos O’Kellys stays in business!

CO sucks too.

What is the deal with Carlos O’Kelly’s anyway? The story is what? An Irishman opens a Mexican restaurant? Seems like a confusing marketing message especially if you’re just going the chi chis route. Give em fajitas with a jumbo margarita and be done with it. Why confuse consumers who might think that they’re going to a shepherd’s pie with chorizo?
I tell you what’s next for Peoria. Aubuelo’s. It’s a chain that isn’t amazing, but it serves more traditional mexican with an elevated ambiance & vibe. Think of a Mexican Biaggi’s.
ps - yep Vonster I’ll take all the real mexican you can throw at me. One of the great benefits of increased immigration.

Eck. It’s like the movie Demolition Man where Taco Bell won the food wars.

I want Pepe Taco back. The new place is ok but doesn’t hold a candle to Pepe Taco. No place in Peoria or the surrounding area even came close to them. Whenever I wanted to treat myself I went to Pepe Taco and had enchiladas, which were my favorite. Life will not be the same without them.
