and one of those artists played at the stadium during the heart of illinois fair about a year or two later (maybe 3-4 years later), to about maybe 400 people, including me.

Peoria musical trivia. My guess is Joan Jett.
Anybody remember, or is it just my imagination, that she was supposed to play the Glen Oak Amplitheater, it got rained out and there was no “secondary” indoor venue “just in case”?

Back when I was in grade school — oh, it must have been around sixth grade maybe — we had to do calisthenics in the morning in the classroom. This was in addition to gym class. Anyway, they would let some students pick music to play for our jumping jacks and whatnot, and two girls in my class always — always — every day — would play “I Love Rock and Roll.” Of course, this was back in the days of 45 rpm singles played on a Bell & Howell industrial record player with the tiny mono speaker. Oh, how I grew to hate — hate — that song.
Ironically, I had a 45 of “Pac Man Fever.” And, I myself had Pac Man fever. Back then I used to go to the arcade and push quarters into the Ms. Pacman machine. There used to be an arcade in Westlake shopping center, across from the Westlake cinemas that played first-run movies — none of which exists anymore.
I’ve never felt so old. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Fond memories…. my good friend Chad was so into Joan Jett. Also, my best friend Marysue and her husband went on their first date at that Westlake theatre (”Weekend at Bernies”).
The Peoria area has changed so much in the last 20 years. I remember when there was nothing much north of Northwoods mall; if you knew where War Memorial Drive was and it’s few main offshoots (Prospect, Knoxville, Sheridan and University) you could get almost anywhere.
I like to tell my kids “horror stories” about growing up with no Taco Bell, no Panera, no Subway or Quiznos.

Jennifer, that’s funny that you mention Taco Bell because the other night I was driving by and remembered when the one opened on the corner of Sterling and Forrest Hill. Not long after I stayed overnight with a friend and her mom took us there for lunch on Saturday — that was such a huge deal for me at the time as my family almost never ate out.
The song I would most like to hear from that list: the MacKenzies’ “Take Off.” Seriously.

Give up?
It was Huey Lewis and the News.
It was a great show, probably the best I’d ever seen at the fair (which isn’t saying much). The crowd was embarrassingly small.
Just remembered:
Three Dog Night played at the fair, in a small tent not far from the main gate. This was when they were still a big deal. It also was a great show, with maybe a couple hundred people watching.
