Official Peoria Journal Star Neighborhood Map

Thanks to a Journal Star reporter who would prefer to remain anonymous, I have a copy of their official map of Peoria designating how they classify sections of town in their articles.

“Attached to this email is the official JS neighborhood map. It illustrates what neighborhoods we (at the paper, at least) consider to be where. I’ll admit, our definitions are a bit loopy (I agree that the West Bluff should not extend north of I-74) but having this map should help clarify things in the future for you and your readers.”

This won’t end the debate as to what each section of the city’s boundaries are, but at least it will end the debate as to what the boundaries are in the Journal Star’s eyes.

Since when does a media outlet, based out of town, have the right to designate what neighborhood is where and ends where, etc? Neighborhood boundaries are set by history, not some moron with a crayon and a map.

When a paper uses such guidelines that are inaccurate you have to begin to wonder if the newspaper is also part of the problem. If some areas are misrepresented as being more crime ridden than others, how does that affect home sales? How does that affect votes? How does that affect police enforcement? Misrepresenting the news at hand is irresponsible.

The PjStar map may be inaccurate - but they often don’t even follow the map. Check out Peoria Chronicle January 9th “No bluffing” - about PJstar article on purse snatching on the West Bluff - that part of the West Bluff that’s east of Peoria (which is east of Knoxville) on Nebraska!
And WMBD/WYZZ have joined PJSTAR in the weird neighborhood game - describing the camera at McClure and Sheridan as in the East Bluff.

This is from the Journal Star’s local stylebook. It became obvious a few years ago that not everyone in the newsroom had the same idea about what to call various parts of the city. This was exacerbated by Peoria’s rapid growth to the north and northwest.

Ultimately, someone had to make a decision about what was what, for the sake of consistency. A lot of people in the newsroom would quibble with various parts of the map. But the need to be on the same page trumps that.

I don’t see any problem with publishing the map, though. Maybe the paper should do that once in a while.

I don’t have a problem with the designations on the map for the most part. There are some boundaries that I would draw a little differently, but overall it’s pretty accurate.
