Bob Dylan - Blood On The Tracks
This is, hands down, one of the greatest albums ever recorded. It reached #1 on the Billboard charts back in 1975. At that time, Bob Dylan was struggling to save his failing marriage; they say that artists do their best work when going through troubled times, and this is no exception. The marriage ultimately failed, but we are left with this personal and heartfelt album from one of the most influential but elusive and secretive artists of our time - and he claimed the songs had nothing to do with his personal life. You be the judge:
1. Tangled Up In Blue - Rolling Thunder Revue, 1975 (a classic video that could be caught on MTV back in the day - the makeup was to help the crowd see him better)
2. Simple Twist of Fate- “The World of John Hammond” Sept 10, 1975
3. You’re a Big Girl Now - Providence, RI, Apr 17, 1997
4. Idiot Wind - Rolling Thunder Revue, Fort Collins, CO, May 23, 1976
5. You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go - (cover)
6. Meet Me In The Morning - (cover)
7. Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts - killer song, no video available.
8. If You See Her, Say Hello - from the movie Renaldo & Clara, 1975 (great song, horrible video)
9. Shelter From The Storm - Rolling Thunder Revue, Fort Collins, Co, May 23, 1976
10. Buckets of Rain - (custom video to the original album audio track)

As Bob said “Pain sure brings out the best in people, doesn’t it?”

great art is about itself, not about cheering up idiots; go listen to Britney Spears ……….. i
ncidentally, Bob said he couldn’t understand people ‘enjoying’ that album.

I find Blonde on Blonde clearly superior to Blood in many ways. If you compare, song by song, there is no question …

Thank you for putting this together. What a great way to spend an hour!!!!

It was years after that I heard all the original NYC sessions, and THAT is the great album. He re-cut 1/2 the album in Minneapolis and those cuts are far inferior to the original NYC sessions. I recommend to anyone to loves this album to burn together the original NYC tracks….and I would say THAT is probably the best album I’ve ever heard (except, perhaps Modern Times!)

I’ve never thought of burning the New York sessions together on one disk. Great idea. Where would I put “Up To Me” in the track listing? Talk about a travesty, leaving that song off. I wonder if it was Bob’s decision because it was too personal, even for a album like this?

Ken, do you have a link for these NYC tracks?
April 16th, 2007 at 1:50 pm
To blogger: could not have been shown on mtv as mtv was not on the air for another 3 years
to commenters….it was not supposed to an “uplifiting album”
links for ny sessions can be found on expectingrain go to “rare dylan recordings” and look either in alphabetical order from main list or
1974 in chronology section…….for what it is worth i consider it one of the most important works of art of the 20th century….only 1 boook has been written on it….but plenty more could and will…..just to show the value — the original hand-written lyrics are in the Morgan Library (but will not be shown to public til 30 years after dylan’s death…..some of us have seen xerox of the original and the lyrical re-writes are quite revealing)…….finally - Up To Me (recorded by McGuinn on album released in early 80’s) would follow/follows Shelter From The Storm - it was the orignal closer….just a cursory listen reveals that - both in melody and in lyrics.

ds, I never said MTV played it during the 70’s. I understand that MTV wasn’t around when the footage was filmed. Just to be clear- MTV played it often in 80’s during their early years.

Great idea, stringing all of those videos together - gives you a great sense of how his songs can be stretched in so many interesting directions. BTW Neko Case does a great version of “Buckets of Rain” - you can get it on iTunes.
