The newbie in CampusTown speaks the truth
Tonight I went over to the Amoco on Main at CampusTown to pick up some smokes. (Yes, I smoke, I’m not proud, don’t give me hell.) If you purchase cigarettes and charge it, not only do they need your ID, but they write down your drivers license number on the credit slip.
I’ve been there enough times to know that I have to whip out my license, but there was a new guy there who didn’t know me so he felt the need to explain:
“We do this for security purposes. There’s lots of panhandlers and crackheads around here.”
Yes, I know… I’ve been panhandled… more than a few times… I’ve seen the crackheads… ran across some prostitutes too…
Gotta love this place.

Even though I quit, I really enjoyed smoking. Sounds weird, but, I miss it.
That Amoco is a very special place. I’m not even crazy about using that CECFCU ATM in the parking lot. See strange people wander by the car.

Last I knew, for a retailer to write down one’s drivers license along with a credit card number was a BIG no no. Like an unlawful no no.
You can add possible identity thieves to your long list of campustown encounters.

I got panhandled at the Dollar Tree at Campus Town last sunday. The man asked to use my cell phone. I felt bad saying no, but I was really afraid he would take it and run away. And, unfortunately, even an inebriated, emaciated homless guy probably runs faster than I do.
I went to Big Lots on Sterling that same day and got panhandled for “$2.85 for a gallon of gas.” I should have asked the dude where he buys his gas, I want in on it, sadly $2.85 sounds cheap. The guy was really pushy and seemed more of a con artist than a typical beggar.

I don’t want to make it sound like I feel unsafe. I don’t. I love the diversity and character of west bluff. Just be aware of your surroundings and don’t put yourself in dangerous situations… like hanging out on a street corner at 2am looking for drugs.
