Good streets I will not traverse after dark.

Note: absolutely no crime data was used in this list. It is based solely on anecdotal evidence and my own flawed biases.

Wisconsin between McClure and Nebraska
MacQueen between University and Sheridan
Flora between Main and I74
Ellis between Main and I74
Douglas between Main and I74
Sheridan between Main and Nebraska, after midnight.

I know it’s a touchy subject, but what about you? Are there any streets or areas of town that you previously had no qualms about which you now specifically avoid?

Hmmm… one time I got lost and ended up on the corner of Grinnel and Griswold, not a good area at any time of the day.
I try to avoid the general area around Western Avenue after dark. Sad, because we used to live on Ann St when we were first married, and then on Sherman off of Western and I loved the area.

Ellis has become a very dangerous several blocks at night, open air street party and no police presence at all. But winter is coming and with it the hibernation of the thugs that reside in the center of every crappy street in town. Never along the sidewalks or in the yards but always in the center of the street, if anyone does not think that is typical territorial and confrontational behavior they are full of sh** . If Bradley students tried that in the student neighborhoods they would have police crawling all over them, but when it happens on Ellis or any of the other streets mentioned the police will not break up the mob until someone gets hurt.

granted I was in my teens(20 years ago) but I would WALK from armstrong/ellis area to the Conveinent Food Store on Main & have no trouble walking down the alleys & sidestreets to get there.

Thrush between Wisconsin and Knoxville. I have friends who live there (who are looking to move) so, I don’t feel totally uncomfortable, but would if they weren’t around.

    Peoria (and not the street)

    I knew that was coming.

Don’t you have any sense of adventure? Why got to Six Flags and pay for their thrill rides when we have our own on the various streets throughout Peoria. Will there be a shooting? Will there be drug dealing? How many thugs can walk in a mob in the middle of the street without having someone completely lose it and mow them all down? The “thrills” are different every time you drive through.

We probably passed each other during those walks. I worked downtown and unless it was 20 below or raining hard, I walked to and from work, living across Main Street from BU. I almost always stopped in the 7-11 or Walgreens on Main, then walked down the alley on the north side of Main to my house (was quieter and easier to avoid traffic at corners).

The ONLY time I felt threatened was in about 1987, in the alley between University and Underhill. Was about 530 pm, springtime, full daylight. I had my briefcase and a small bag from 7-11. About midway down the alley, 5 young guys of a different ethnic persuasion rounded the corner and spread out lengthwise across the alley. I had two choices, make an obvious detour into the parking lot to avoid “being murdered” or just keep walking, which is what I did. As we got 10 feet from each other, the 2 closest to me moved closer together, attempting to block my way. I kept walking, eyes straight ahead. I was between them before they had a chance to completely block me off. As I passed, one of them whispered “f*cker” almost right in my ear. I kept walking, stopped to let traffic pass on University, then looked to my side, where a small group of BU (I’m guessing there) students, of my same ethnic persuasion, stood, staring at me. One of them said “That took balls.” I just shrugged and crossed University and continued down the alley, never once looking back at the 5 from the alley.

Making that same walk for about seven years, that was the only time I ever felt in danger.

Of course, at my age, and the times being what they are, I doubt I would make that same walk again. At least not alone, or unarmed.

Come ‘on Barbie, I’m not allowed to be armed…kinda takes the adventure out of it ;)

Funny thing, the neighbors, across the street from apparently left for an out of town trip on Thursday afternoon. We noticed their front door wide open, which, being cooler that day was nothing unusual. I have seen it wide open many times. This went on until Sunday morning when I finally decided to go over and make sure everything was all right. I yelled inside but no answer. Door wide open, so I called the police. 3 officers responded and entered the home where everything looked like it was in place. A whole room full of music instruments was even intact. They found nothing amiss and closed and locked the door (not the deadbolt). It appears that when they left, the last person did not shut the door completely and it blew open. There it was no lights, wide open, unlocked, TV, radio, musical instruments, and everything untouched, all in the good ol south end 5 blocks from Manual High School. I would easily walk my street at night before I would even get out of a car at McClure and Sheridan and we don’t have a crime camera.

Just when I start to get “buying a house fever” some runs a post like this. At least it isn’t quite as visual as the gun discharge map on the Chronicle a couple of months back. When am I going to learn that real estate in Peoria isn’t for the risk averse.

If you want to get a real honest feel for where it is safe and where it is not; ask a delivery driver for any of the local restaurants like Avanti’s or Pizza Hut. There are streets that drivers refuse to go to. They know where the bad shit is, most of the time.

  15. PeoriaIllinoisan Says:

Monday’s Journal Star; the delivery driver has apparently been robbed several times before and was so jaded by the police response, he called his supervisor at Avanti’s instead of the police:

Avanti’s delivery driver robbed of money, food

Peoria - Two men robbed an Avanti’s Italian Restaurant delivery man about midnight Saturday in the 900 block of Orange Street.

Cindy Daxenbichler, manager of Avanti’s, 1301 W. Main St., called police to report the robbery. The 53-year-old delivery man told police he called Daxenbichler and not them because he’s been robbed before and police haven’t found any suspects.

The man told police he was delivering food in the 900 block of Orange Street when he was approached by two men, who then grabbed $24 worth of food from him and about $50 from his front left pants pocket. The delivery man said he didn’t see a weapon, but one man had his hand under his shirt as though he might have one.

The men then ran through the alley toward Garfield Avenue. The delivery man told police he didn’t set up the robbery, nor did he chase the men, but he did throw a soda can at one of them.

Ask a delivery guy at any Major College town and you will find that they get robbed there as well, often times on campus. I went to school at a large state university and delivered food for a couple of years, our guys were robbed both on and off campus fairly regularly. Mostly late night snatch and grabs and often times just the food. We had problems at one apartment complex every weekend with pizzas getting snatched, we made some wonderful decoy pies and would occasionally take one over there and walk around until someone jumped out and grabbed it and then wonder what they thought when they were eating the disgusting present we had concocted for them.

  17. Vonster Says:

GENIUS! Decoy pies chock full of fast-acting laxative!!! Then watch the emergency rooms. Bam! You got ‘em. Even if they don’t get busted, you’d have the satisfaction of knowing a few deserving assholes were having a literal shit fit. No foties you you tonight, bro.
