Breaking: Another Bradley Student Hit By Car

This time on University near the intersection of Bradley Ave where the kids dart across 5 lanes to get from the apartments to campus.  There is a cross walk, but no light or stop sign. There is a light if one were to walk down to Campustown, but it is as little used as the Main Street pedestrian light.

You hear of Police ticketing people for stupid things, why not start ticketing Bradley jaywalkers for their own good? Actually, Bradley ought to build a pedestrian bridge at that intersection …of course, no-one would use it…

As a recent Bradley graduate and renter in St. James apartments, as well as having crossed that intersection many times, I feel that it is the intersection in general that is dangerous, not the kids who “dart” across. There is also no real jaywalking going on, especially when you yourself said there was a crosswalk, but no lights or signs.

As for the Campustown light, it gets used more often than you think it does. For 95% of St. James residents, that is the main light to use for crossing for class. As for a skywalk over the road, I think it’s a great idea and that if implemented and constructed in the proper place, it would be utilized more often than not.

I see BU students jaywalking across University at various points between Campustown and Bradley Avenue all the time. I’m surprised no one has been hit.

Wow … I lived over there for 5 years, and couldn’t agree with you more.

  4. Mahkno Says:

They should put a light there for pedestrians like they have at Glenwood and Main.

  5. Mahkno Says:

Yeah a skywalk would be good too.

A pedestrian bridge over University near the athletic fields would be a fantastic solution. Bradley kids cross that street all over the place and it is a matter of time before another gets hit and killed.

The pedestrian light at that point would be highly utilized, as opposed to main street, because of the fence surrounding the fields, the only access points from the apartments are at Bradley Ave or down towards Campustown.

A pedestrian bridge would be great but I don’t know where it would dump out on the campus side. It would have to be handicapped accessible, so unless one were to put an elevator in there, it would have to have a very long ramp. There’s just not that much room for that.

It does speak of poor planning to have this massive apartment complex owned by the University itself, on the other side of a major street with no good way to cross it.

Yep just what Peoria needs, another traffic light. (Note the new traffic light at the bottom of Main St hill) If a light is installed, then I think it would be too close to Moss Ave. light otherwise, the city should install a light at the N University Post Office. That is dangerous to pull out from in a car but the city says it is too close to Northmoor’s lights.

At any rate, if they do install another traffic light then two things should happen….1) Bradley pays for the light, not the taxpayers and 2) Police start ticketing for J walking.

Does anyone know if the boy is ok?

There was a brief mention of it in today’s paper. Just said it was a female who was hit around 3:00pm by someone turning north (left) onto University from Bradley Ave. There wasn’t much more info. The person who told me about it just said she saw someone layed out in the middle of University. Hopefully it’s no more than some bumps and bruises.

Thanks for the update, looked online at pjstar and didn’t see it.
The sitter picked up my 5 year old son from school and was there when it happened. The victim didn’t move at all, eyes open when taken away on the stretcher, no muscle movement though. It was a bit traumatic.

    Hope she’s okay.

Agree that a walkbridge is much needed!!

IF a traffic light is necessary, it is the City’s responsability to pay for it, not Bradley. Traffic control is a basic city service, and a ligitimate function of government.

[...] aforementined accident on University at Bradley Avenue got me to thinking about how unsafe that area really is. Yes, [...]

  14. Emtronics Says:

City responsibility? OK the speed limit is 30 mph. If people are getting hit crossing, then enforce the limit. There are crosswalk signs posted but sadly people don’t read signs. If the city planted a stop light everywhere people wanted them, the traffic would be worse than it is now. It’s a matter of drivers following the laws and if they don’t, it makes matters unsafe. Enforce them! Start ticketing these people who feel speed limits don’t apply to them.
