What in the world is going on around here?

7th_newman_gc.jpg

On the heels of the craziness of Heritage Days and the riot at Steamboat Days comes this little tidbit buried in the sports section…

Illini Golf has collected more than 28,000 golf balls and 500 golf clubs for shipment to U.S. troops in Iraq. The Country Club of Peoria, Mt. Hawley and WeaverRidge also have begun collecting equipment, which IG manager Jim Hoffman said will be shipped some time in August. … Speaking of Hoffman, his cell phone and Sky Caddie were stolen from his golf cart on June 5 when he was on the No. 7 tee at Newman. Hoffman said a group of 15 to 20 teenage boys were coming down the fairway. One of the kids snatched the items from Hoffman’s cart and they took off running across Nebraska.

You’re telling me that Golf Courses aren’t safe havens from the chaos of life anymore? What in the world is this town coming to? NOW I’m getting pissed.

Thugs! Low Life Thugs! And no one is stopping them…. just wait til they start walking around the neighborhoods that were once considered safe and start taking what they want. Who is going to stop them? They know people are afraid of them and they find power in that fact. Just think they’ll be getting Wednesdays off soon.. Thank you, Ken Hinton! Why doesn’t he see that they need to be in school where someone cares about their future?

I have to say P.I., I’ve been golfing the Park District courses for a lot of years and the most people I have ever seen on the course who weren’t golfers were two people jogging.

The worst I’ve seen (other than gun shots from below the bluffs as I was on the 16th tee of Madison) were kids slicing across Madison GC’s 1st & 2nd holes- usually on foot but with an occasional bicycle.

If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a million times. Get north of War Memorial or east of the Illinois River, or everything you have will get stolen or shot.

  5. Happy to live IN Peoria Says:

Yeah, because nothing happens north of War Dr or across the river. Oh yeah, I forgot, east of the river is pleasentville.

Part of the problem is these kids have nothing else to do. If there are things to do, they aren’t advertising well enough.

I guess I should notate comments made tongue-in-cheek as such for the slower readers. :)

I don’t buy the “nothing else to do” argument. They had Heritage Days and Steamboat Days and we know how well those went over. It simply comes down to parenting, or the lack there-of.

    Damned white kids.

  9. mortonmalaise Says:

It’s that damn Jack Johnson. He’s making the kids steal things. Those soft melodies and acoustic guitar thinly veil his mantra of destruction and hate.

  10. WestBluffGuy Says:

I agree with PeoriaIllinoisan. If it doesn’t involve fighting, destruction or “self-medicating” these kids aren’t into it anyway. There’s nothing to do because they keep ruining everything. Don’t give them that excuse folks! As Chris Rock famously said, “grand opening…grand closing!”

    Whole Foods on the way?

  12. septboy Says:

Mazr are you referring to the PJS top of fold story about Sheridan Village? What was the jist of the article? saw it at a gas station on my way to work & was anxious to read it online but can’t find it on the PJS website.

  13. Cory Says:

50 bad kids ruined it for several thousand people at Steamboat Days. You can’t blame every kid in the city for the behavior of those jackasses.

  14. nothing to do Says:

send the bad kids to the library

  15. Mazr Says:

septboy, that’s what I was referring to. The Whole Foods rumor was going around a few months ago, and now everything that was rumored seems to be happening.

Also, does anyone know what happened on Sheridan Rd? Across from the strip mall with Stride Rite and the soccer store by the Lake St. lights, there was a plot of land with a bunch of old beautiful trees and some houses which have been demolished and all the trees cut down.

  16. PeoriaIllinoisan Says:

Word on the street says it’s not a Whole Foods after all, but a generic equivalent, and I don’t mean Trader Joes.

  17. Cory Says:

I heard it was going to be another Super Wal-Mart.

“I don’t buy the “nothing else to do” argument. ”

I don’t either. I think a lot of these kids need jobs, or volunteer commitments, or generally SOMETHING ELSE TO THINK ABOUT BESIDES THEMSELVES. Extended adolescence gives kids who in the past were competent adults years and years to navel gaze, and that’s just not good for anybody.

  22. Cory Says:

Why in the hell do I show up as mortonmalaise in some comments and Cory in others? I wonder if my browser is auto-completing differently at work than it is at home.

    /non sequitur
