The Chiefs are an embarrassment to Peoria
If you haven’t heard the story yet, in a nutshell (because I like nutshells) several tit for tat events between the Peoria Chiefs and the Dayton Dragons quickly escalated and boiled over when Cheif’s starting pitcher Julio Castillo threw a ball towards the Dayton Dragon’s dugout. His fastball missed (explainging why he is in single A ball) and hit a female fan in the face, sending her to the hospital. Benches cleared and a total of 15 players were ejected. Julio Castillo was arrested and charged with felony assault.

I can appreciate tensions running high, but there is just no reason to behave like that ever.
I think it should be noted that Ryne Sandberg was not there because he was at the Baseball Hall of Fame. I wonder if that would have made a difference?

Kate,
Ryno would’ve been ejected before any of it started. He’s built himself quite a reputation for getting thrown out of games.

The Chiefs are an embarrassment to Peoria? I’m thinking that few are following the follies of the minor league team of Peoria. And, actually, hasn’t Peoria always had a rough reputation as with most “river” towns.

I don’t follow single A baseball, but when a minor league team makes national news because a pitcher throws a beam ball at the opposing dugout which sends a fan to the hospital, resulting in the player from Peoria being charged with Felony Assault … I would say, yes, they are an embarrassment. Others were involved, and brawls happen, but this guy took it way too far and like it or not he is a representative of our town and this story was blasted all over the country.
I’m with katearch wondering what Ryno would have done. I can only hope that he kicks some minor league asses.

Sad to see Peoria all over the national news for this type of behavior. Sad, just plain sad.

Just talked to my Pa who lives elsewhere. He watched it on “the YouTube” (that’s what he calls it) and pretty much summed it up…”eh…gotta keep the adrenaline up.” This kinda stuff happens all the time in the minors. Any publicity is good publicity for a minor league team. And I’m guessing Ryne woulda been the first one ejected.
I’m more sad to see Peoria in the news because Shrub swung threw the neighborhood.

The Cubs seem to have quite a track record with this behavior…..they drafted Ben Christensen.

Apparently this type of behavior has become the norm for Peoria. Quite thughish don’t you think?

Anyone besides me just as disturbed by the fans you hear in the background?

Gotta keep your head on a swivel when you’re in the front row during a vicious baseball cockfight.

Mahkno,
You need to attend more baseball games if you think that’s out of the ordinary. It IS out of the ordinary for that many people to be yelling that early in a game. Then again, it is Ohio, where all native sports fans are complete a**holes. It’s like Philadelphia with more inbreeding.

Maybe it is because I don’t attend a lot of games, that I notice this stuff. Regular attendees are probably inured to it. The behavior of the players is shameful but then so is what I am hearing of the fans too. The lady laughing her ass off throughout the whole incident. Funny shit watching someone get beamed by a ball in the face and then players pummeling each other? WTF…

I seriously doubt the laughing woman, or anyone else joking around, saw the woman get hit with the baseball. It probably happened so fast that no one really noticed the lady with blood gushing from her face in the front row, especially with the melee going on at field level distracting them.
