Mayor Daley to Wrigleyville Bar Owners: Remember Meigs Field? You Could Be Next.
If you haven’t heard, Mayor Daley has been pushing for the bars in Wrigleyville to stop serving alcohol during the 7th inning during potential ‘clinch’ games, similar to what is done inside Wrigley Field. Well, he got his way and it never even came to a vote. The bar owners are scared to death of what the Mayor could do to their business if they don’t comply.
Take this quote from Tribune: “You say it’s voluntarily, but, c’mon, it’s a directive from the city” and this one from the Sun-Times: “We all know that we have to protect [ourselves] and be cautious.”
Crazy? While listening to WLSAM this afternoon, neither respected radio host Roe Conn nor seasoned ABC-7 Achorman Ron Magers could get anyone to speak on the record. Not a single one, for fear of retribution.
Now THAT’S power.

What about the bars around Comiskey Park? Why all the focus on just the Cubs and not the Sox who have actually won a championship recently? Not that this is a good thing for the Cubs, but still.

I agree, the South Side of Chicago should stop all alcohol and crack cocaine sales after the 7th inning during White Sox ‘clinch’ games.

It’s not wise to underestimate Richard M. Daley! He truly runs the City of Chicago instead of catering to every whim of big business like Peoria’s mayor and city council. Arrogant business owner’s, nowadays, act as if laws and ordinances don’t apply to them since they’re ” providing jobs and economic development ” .
Wrigleyville establishments have a, notorious, history of abusing and violating city codes and rules for a lucrative stake of the, enormously-profitable, Cubs atmosphere. If a Meigs Field-like scare tactic is the only way to get the violator’s attention, then so be it! Besides, if leveled, that land would instantly become some of the most-prized on Earth given the value of such a coveted location amongst Chicago real estate.
Wrigleyville establishments would be wise to comply with the Mayor!
