Say it ain’t so!

Tilley’s, the restaurant which took over the RiverStation, has officially closed its doors. I heard the rumor a few days ago, but didn’t want to spread it for fear of repercussions as what Johnny’s claimed happened to them when false rumors of their demise began to circulate. After reading the article, I felt bad that I had played a small role in that circulation, but was happy to hear that they were still doing well. I enjoy Johnny’s very much.
Tilley’s, on the other hand, as so many other businesses these days, could not handle the economic downturn. My wife and I ate there twice; the atmosphere was spectacular as always, and both the service and food were exceptional. I made it a point to encourage anyone who would listen to pay them a visit, as I felt it was as good or better than any restaurant that had occupied the wonderful old depot. I’ll miss them.
I can only hope that they showed more respect to their employees than the owner of the Golden Corral in Washington. Something tells me they did.

Anyone who has been in this biz for a while in this area could see this happening from the first announcement (except the owners apparently). The first thing was the size of the establishment. It is just too big to support a positive outcome in this economic environment.
Now I wonder about the new restaurant June located on Prospect. Wonderful menu, very expensive and appealing to limited tastes within this area. I hope they can make it and maybe they will since their seating I believe is about 60 or so.

The problem in Peoria is too many upscale restaurants. Look how many of the upscale restaurants fail and how many chain restaurants fail. I know that chain restaurants drive Chef nuts, but people like them, me included. I can take my whole family to Chilis for less than my wife and I can go to an upscale joint. I’m not saying upscale joints are bad, there are just too many in Peoria.

I am, I guess, an anachronism, but quite simply, I very rarely go to any restaurants in Peoria because I don’t like having my pocket picked for civic center welfare. I go to East Peoria, the heights, or the county. The last film I saw in Peoria was at the Varsity.

Ah, The Varsity . . . I attended the final show there.
