As I was looking for a few places on Google Maps today, I noticed that if you type in "Peoria Mineral Springs, Peoria, IL" and then click on the "Street View" it will take you right to a pic from MLK Dr. of the stairs to the Mineral Springs that used to be there. Wonder what happened to them.

Scio - I thought there was a stone stairway also but I haven't dug through my photos yet to say for sure. As I recall, the water in the tunnel was usually a foot or more deep before the cave-in. Just in front of the old door is a miniature manhole cover (for lack of a better word) which you can remove to see and feel the spring water flowing into a drainage pipe.

PeoriaIllinoisan - Did it look like old stone stairway from the MLK sidewalk had been broken up and removed from your prior visit? When I found the Mineral Springs there really didn't look to be much of the stairway left.

Josh, when I was there (I made prior posts in this blog and the NameThisPeoriaLandmark blog as Wanderer and Ryder) the water didn't look to be deeper than a few inches (maybe a foot at most). Of course there was debris in the tunnel from the cave in which covered some of the water flowing beneath it. The spring was still flowing though, I could hear it through the drainage pipe below the metal door.

Just a funny note, along with the metal chain on the door, someone had put a purple bicycle chain on the door too. Looked a little odd.
